Real Madrid player: Pablo Prigioni ..

Of the many shining stars that South America has given the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, one of the steadiest is Pablo Prigioni of Real Madrid. After debuting in the competition at age 26, Prigioni quickly found a place among the Euroleague's all-time great point guards. One year after his arrival, Prigioni began a string of four consecutive Final Four appearances with his first Euroleague team, Tau Ceramica of Spain. During that time, he led the competition in steals, set the current single-season record of 156 assists and was named to the All-Euroleague team twice. He now ranks second among all Euroleague players this century in total assists and steals.

Real Madrid signed Prigioni in 2009 for his experience at running top teams, including bronze-medal winning Argentina at the most recent Olympic Games, a year earlier in Beijing, China. A proven winner, Prigioni has thrived as a pass-first guard – few playmakers run the pick-and-roll as well – while scoring enough to make defenses pay for ignoring him. Indeed, Prigioni recently marked his eighth Euroleague season by scoring a career-high 17 points to help Madrid gain homecourt advantage in the playoffs. Once there, he averaged the most steals, third-most assists and sixth-most minutes among all playoff performers. Prigioni's experience, poise and vision under pressure could prove invaluable to Madrid at this Final Four. So can his motivation: having lost his only Euroleague title game until now, Prigioni hopes to change his luck – nine days before his 34th birthday – by giving himself and Real Madrid a present that both have waited a long time to hold.

How does it feel to be back to your fifth Final Four, your first one with Real Madrid?

"Huge! It's a huge satisfaction. It is a sports success and it's always nice to be part of a Final Four. Reaching the Final Four with such an important club as Real Madrid makes it even more important for me."

How does your previous Final Four experience help?

"I don't really think that having been in other previous Final Fours can be determinant since the moment and the rivals are completely different. We just have to try to reach the date in the best possible shape and knowing that every minute counts."

Most of your teammates are playing in their first Final Four. What advice do you have for them?

"It's not easy, but what I think is that we have to prepare this game well, thinking that we are going to play a very important one, only that. We must have a lot of concentration and responsibility."

Only two Final Four players are older than you. What advantage does age give you?

"Maybe the fact of being a veteran player and having more experience than other players in this kind of events can calm you down a little, but given my personality, I really don't know whether that will happen or not! What no one can question is that experience helps and it helps you look at these events from another perspective."

What makes this event special for you?

"This Final Four is very special for me, my teammates and the club. We have been through rough years and we have suffered a lot to be here. That, the long years that Real Madrid has waited to be in a Final Four again and the will we are putting in this event makes it all something very special for us and all the Real Madrid fans."

    Jeremy Pargo, Maccabi Electra
    by: Javier Gancedo, Euroleague.net
    May 1, 2011

This season has already been a dream Turkish Airlines Euroleague debut for Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv point guard Jeremy Pargo. And it can still get better. Pargo was the hero of Maccabi's playoff series win over Caja Laboral, as his clutch plays and impressive stats led to his selection as Sportingbet Euroleague MVP for March. Now, Pargo looks to shoulder the load for two more do-or-die games as Maccabi heads this week to the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in Barcelona. Pargo has a chance to join some elite company. The three starting point guards who led Maccabi to its five previous Euroleague crowns – Moti Aroesti, Arriel McDonald and Sarunas Jasikevicius – remain legends in Tel Aviv. Pargo is naturally eager to become a Euroleague champ and join their company. He possesses all the tools to accomplish that: extraordinary speed and explosive leaping ability – main ingredients in the highlight-reel slams that make him a fan favorite in Tel Aviv – plus outstanding perimeter shooting and tough defense. The challenge, which starts with a duel against Real Madrid in the semifinals on Friday, May 6, will not be easy for a rookie whose backcourt partner, Doron Perkins, will miss the Final Four after getting injured in Game 3 of the playoffs. But Pargo has shown himself to be adept at surpassing challenges. With his playoffs performance, he met a big one by becoming Maccabi's leader at the moment that Perkins was lost. Now, he'll play the same role at the Final Four. "We have to come out, be ourselves and do the things that we have done to get to this point," Pargo told Euroleague.net. "If we manage to do that, I think we will have a good chance to reach the final."

Congratulations, Jeremy, on a great rookie season, going to the Final Four as an all-Euroleague nominee. How are you enjoying this competition?

"Thank you. It is being a great experience. This is my first Euroleague season and I am excited to go to the Final Four. We have to stay together as a team, play hard and see where that takes us, but so far and like I said, it’s been a great experience for me."

Advancing to the Final Four was surely the highlight until now. What was the feeling like to win Game 4 and clinch a spot in Barcelona?

"We knew what we wanted to do - come out and play hard, do whatever it takes to get to the next level and reach the Final Four. The feeling was great, it was a sense of joy and excitement. It was a tough series for us, losing a great player like Doron Perkins, so being able to come out and win both games in Tel Aviv without him says a lot about us, our character and how well we play together."

Your dominant performances in the Playoffs led to your selection as the Sportingbet Euroleague MVP for March. What does that honor mean to you coming at such a pivotal part of the season?

"It is an achievement that I honestly didn't expect. It came out of nowhere for me and it wasn't one of my goals. Of course, I have to thank my teammates because I wouldn't have won it without them. Winning the MVP of March means that I played well in some of the most important games this season and I am proud of that. You always want to win games, but we have been able to pull together at the right time. We have to keep it going, even when there is a month between the end of the Playoffs and the Final Four. We hope to come back ready to play and win the title."

It was back in Game 2 against Caja Laboral that your game-winning jumper very much changed the series. Was that a planned play or an improvised shot?

"You know, it is actually a play that we run during the course of the game. Just a play that we called at that moment and worked out for the best. They have great fans over there and it was not an easy opponent to face on the road, but it was a great opportunity for us to come out with a win."

How did you and your teammates overcome seeing Doron Perkins carried off the floor in Game 3 of the playoffs to win that night and clinch without him in Game 4?

"In that situation, we pulled together closer as a team. Unfortunately, Doron's injury happened, so we tried our best to come together as a team and play hard. The only thing in our mind had to be going to the Final Four and it worked out. Seeing him in good spirits - in a message in Nokia Arena's video wall before Game 4 - and smiling one day after he went down was definitely a great inspiration for all of us."

Now the focus is on Real Madrid in the semifinals. What do you expect from having watched them play?

"I expect it to be a tough game, of course. Real Madrid has a lot of great players and they are a good team. They wouldn't be in this position if they weren't a good team. We have to come out, be ourselves and do the things that we have done to get to this point. If we manage to do that, I think we will have a good chance to reach the final."

Jeremy Pargo - Maccabi ElectraYou will likely match up against one of the Euroleague's most veteran playmakers, Pablo Prigioni. How do you prepare to face an older, experienced guy like that?

"You just have to give your best and be smart on the court to match his level of experience. You cannot pretend to do anything special against him, just come out, play hard and like I said, do what you have done to get to this point."

How does not having Doron Perkins affect your game individually and that of the whole team in general?

"It is going to be a bit different because Doron does a lot of things on the court. He is an intense guy that plays hard every moment and we have to pick that part up that will be missing. I think he is the best defensive player not only in the team, but in the Euroleague, so we will have to give our best to be at the same defensive level."

While you have been Maccabi’s top weapon from the perimeter, Sofoklis Schortsanitis has been unstoppable in the paint. What is it like playing with him?

"Oh, Sofo is big and demands so much attention. Having a guy like that can change every game and makes it easier for the guards. Hopefully we can do our part and help him. The better we play, the easier options he will have in the paint - and if he plays well, he will be double-teamed and will give us a better chance to score."

Coach Blatt gave you the keys to this team. What did you learn this season and how do you plan to drive at the Final Four?

"Like I said, the one thing we plan to do and the most important one is being ourselves. If we do that, this is what got us to this point. If we come out ready and play as a team, like we did all year, and take one game at the time, we will be fine."

    Carlos Suarez, Real Madrid

Six seasons after he made a brief but strong debut as a teenager, Carlos Suarez of Real Madrid has enjoyed a standout return to the Euroleague this season with a number of heralded performances to lead his team to important wins. But none was more important that Game 5 of the Playoffs when the small forward turned in a double-double that helped Madrid win its do-or-die showdown against Power Electronics Valencia for a place in the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. His 12 points, 10 rebounds and 7 rebounds proved that Suarez is made for big games and were instrumental in Madrid making its own return, to the Final Four, after 15 years. A modern small forward with good size, excellent ball-handling skills and superb athleticism, Suarez had played in the Euroleague with Estudiantes in the 2004-05 season, but the team had not returned since. With Madrid, whom he joined this season, he has been the team's second-best defensive rebounder and third-best three-point shooter, which says plenty about his importance for head coach Emanuele Molin heading to Barcelona this week. Suarez considers reaching the Final Four a great achievement, but wants more. "It is a privilege to play the Final Four and we have to be happy about it, but we won't settle for that," Suarez told Euroleague.net. "We don't just want to be one of the four best teams in Europe, but the best one, so we can dedicate it to our fans."

Hello, Carlos. Congratulations on reaching the Final Four. How special is this achievement for you?

“Thanks a lot. It is very special, of course. Madrid has not been to the Final Four in the last 15 years, so coming here this season and having the chance to play it is a great achievement. I didn’t expect to play a Final Four with Madrid so soon, but we earned the right to be here and I am very happy about it.”

Madrid did not have an easy season. What helped you make it to Barcelona?

“Well, we are a young team and we were inexperienced at times. We had moments during this season in which we didn't play well. We improved in the Top 16, but all we needed was a little patience and to have our fans backing us. People had patience with us and the good results have arrived – we made it to the Final Four and have played at a great level as a team.”

After playing only in the Spanish League for five consecutive seasons, how difficult was the adjustment for you to playing two competitions?

“Playing two competitions is physically demanding, of course. At the same time, it is obvious that when you play just once a week, the days are longer than when you play twice a week and travel a lot. Every player loves to play and a season looks shorter and more exciting when you play twice a week. The more you play, the better.”

Madrid lost four of its first five Euroleague road games, then won the next four out of five. What changed?

“We were aware that if we wanted to continue playing in this competition, to become one of the best teams around, we had to play on the road with the same intensity than we did at home. Once we managed to do that, good results started to arrive.”

The series against Power Electronics Valencia was simply outstanding. What were the biggest keys that allowed you to reach the Final Four?

“There were several keys, but rebounding was the biggest one, in my opinion. We also managed to play good defense against their most important players – Omar Cook, Dusko Savanovic and Rafa Martinez.”

You were reunited this season with Sergio Rodriguez, your former Estudiantes teammate, after many years. How do you like playing with him again?

“First of all, having a player like Sergio in the team makes me happy, after not having the chance to play with him for a long time. Above all, I think he is the best player in Europe when it comes to the transition game. I think that we will see the best of him in no time.”

Carlos Suarez - Real MadridReal Madrid faces Maccabi in the semifinals. What do you need to do well to reach the title game?

“Maccabi is a very physical team with important players at all positions. I would highlight Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Jeremy Pargo as its best players. We have to play good defense against Maccabi. They had a great Euroleague season. We hope that, even though we don’t have their experience, we will manage to find a way to beat them.”

Speaking of experience, only two Madrid players - Pablo Prigioni and Sergi Vidal - have been to the Final Four before. How much of a factor can this be in such a high-pressure game?

“When you play for Real Madrid, that pressure is always there, in every single game. We are all used to playing with pressure. That will not be the problem. Like you said, only Pablo and Sergi have previous Final Four experience, but that has to be a matter of motivation for us. We are young, hungry and don’t have the number of titles other players like, for instance, Dimitris Diamantidis has. That has to motivate us even more to win the Euroleague.”

Everyone in Madrid must be excited about the chance to win the title. Is there a special atmosphere around the team and in the city?

“Our fans are very excited. They are looking forward to going to Barcelona and seeing their team in the Final Four after 15 years away from it. They can’t wait to see us play in Barcelona, but we have to stay calm and take one game at the time. We are in the Final Four despite being one of the youngest teams in the Euroleague – and definitely the youngest one in the event. Our fans have to be aware that this team has a long run in it and hopes to compete for the Euroleague title for many years to come.”

Last but not least, Madrid has the chance to add a ninth Euroleague title and start a new era. What would it mean for you and the club to lift the trophy at the end of the weekend?

“Along with an Olympic medal, winning the Euroleague is the best thing you can achieve as a basketball player. There are a lot of important players that have retired without winning a Euroleague title. Someone like Alberto Herreros, who is so important in Spanish basketball, told me the other day that he never even made it to a Final Four despite being close several times. It is a privilege to play the Final Four and we have to be happy about it, but we won’t settle for that. We don’t just wanna be one of the four best teams in Europe, but the best one so we can dedicate it to our fans.”
